I’m a nanny and I see shit like this happen all the time and it kills me! The flip side of this incredibly racist issue is that as a white person people always assume that I must be the kid’s mother even when we look nothing alike. Like when I worked for an Indian family and people would actually ask me what race my husband was (since the kid obviously didn’t get her dark skin, hair, and eyes, and her Indian accent, first and last name, and language from me) and would tell her to “go bring that to your mommy” when we were out in public together. I even got invites to mommy groups while I was with her and I would see how the nannies who are people of color would get treated - like they’re servants, like they’re lesser people, like they’re irrelevant and inconsequential. It makes me sick every single time I see it. People really need to figure out a way to see past race to the person.
